About Our Museum

The Historical Museum is one of the oldest scientific and cultural institutes in Vidin, an important socially significant center for storage, scientific processing and popularization of cultural and historical values.

The beginning of museum work in the Vidin region dates back to 1910, when the Archaeological Society was founded and the first museum collection was organized. After the wars of the mid-20s of the 20th century, the archaeological society “Bononia” activated its collecting activities and, under the leadership of the teacher Vasil Atanasov, arranged an exhibition of mainly numismatic materials and Bulgarian needlework in the building of the old Turkish post office. The place of the Vidin Museum in the national museum network is confirmed by its successes in the construction of the museum expositions, the structuring of the departments and the achievements in the scientific research field. The museum has a well-built and complete structure corresponding to its general historical profile:

 Archeology (with sections “Prehistory”, “Antiquity” and “Middle Ages”) – the rich exposition of the department is located in the mainly restored Konaka building (1977).

 Numismatics – the fund includes over 30 thousand coins. Ethnography – the exposition is located in the “Cross Barracks” museum since 1969.

 The Bulgarian lands XV-XIX centuries – the exhibition is located in Konaka.
